Representation within the commercial illustration industry needs to change.
While a certain amount of progress has been made with on-screen talent in recent years, and although several entertainment companies are starting to make strides toward diversity and inclusion, inequality persists and is deeply entrenched across the commercial illustration ecosystem.
Art is at the nexus of our pop culture, yet diverse illustrators and content creators still remain woefully underrepresented. Stories matter. Representation matters. It’s time for more new and diverse stories and storytellers. And we’re here for it.
– 40% of the US is nonwhite
– 13.4% of Americans identify as black
– 6% of directors, writers, and producers in film and entertainment are black
– Only 4.9% of comic writers and 3.9% of comic book artists are black. Only 4.2% of comic writers and 8.4% of comic book artists are Asian. only 7.1% of comic writers, and 11.7% of comic book writers are Hispanic or Latinx.
Barriers that undermine equity in content development, financing, marketing, and distribution come at a substantial cost to the commercial arts industry. By addressing the persistent racial inequalities that exist, the industry could reap an additional $10 billion in annual revenues – about 7 percent more than the assessed baseline of $148 billion.
By creating a marketplace. Demand for diverse content is on the rise, and industry leaders are competing for diverse audiences. We are helping our industry partners solve some of their most systemic challenges – as a service.
